LANGUAGE CONTESTS
Avonside H.S. Success A remarkable success was recorded in the recent Christchurch secondary' school language contests by a pupil of Avonside Giris’ High School, Wendy Baxter. She won the Latin and German contests and came second in French. In the Latin and German contests, Wendy Baxter, Susan Freemantle and Lor-
rarne Capill, all of Avonside, filled the first three places each time. Only one pupil from each Christchurch school was eligible for the French oonltcst.
Nine other girls from Avonside gained places or merit passes in the contests. At the meeting of the school's board of governors this week, congratulations were expressed tio Wendy Baxter and the other contestants, and to Miss A. M. K. Smith, the girls’ German teacher. The growing secondary school roll in Christchurch meant that competition in the language contests was becoming harder, and it was pleasing to see that modern languages were so strong in the school, said the ohaiirman. Dr G Jobberns.
