PERRIES IN COAL

Difficulties Of Identification (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. Water-worn pebbles that occurred occasionally in the Grey district coal seams were not easily distinguished by stone pickers, said the Minister of Mines (Mr §>hand) in Parliament today. It was impossible to eliminate all stones from the coal, he said in reply to a question by Mr D. J. Riddiford (Govt., Wellington Central) about “the dangerous character of certain South Island coal which is reported as exploding in fireplaces.” Mr Shand agreed with Mr Riddiford that these pebbles, which developed a black skin in the coal seams, were found in patches, but they were not in areas sufficiently defined as to make it possible to decide to mine only in particular places. The pebbles expanded rapidly in a fire, and sometimes caused a sharp shock when they exploded and scattered into a room, but they were not known to have done any damage, said Mr Shand.
