Start Of Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel

This is Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound, where the tailrace from the Manapouri powerhouse will discharge. The tailrace tunnel will enter the hillside near the spot marked with a circle. The tunnel, 5} miles long, will run from the powerhouse, 700 feet under the west arm of Lake Manapouri, on the other side of a range of mountains, to the sound. The tunnel will gradually slope to the inlet, where it will be 100 feet below sea level. The driving of the tunnel will be from west to east. When t'he tunnel east of the adit is completed, the por-

tion from the adit to the outlet will be done. A road 14 miles tong and 16ft wide will be made on the steep hillsides (along the route shown) over the Wilmot Pass, 2225 ft above sea level. The pass is shown in the background. The road is to be completed by September 1, 1964. It will link Deep Cove and the west arm of Lake Manapouri. • The general position of the tunnel entrance and the road was marked on this photograph in Christchurch last evening by the project manager of the £9,387,787 Manapouri project, Mr R. K. Harris.
