Cardigan Bay In Splendid Order
Cardigan Bay showed that he had thrived since his brilliant win in the Lightning Handicap on Saturday when he worked freelegged on his own at Addington yesterday morning. He strode over two miles, working well within himself all the way.
The trials were held in rain, but the track was in good order early. The surface began to lift before some of the later workers reached the track and most of them were restricted to jogging or galloping exercise. They will be worked this morning or tomorrow.
Cardigan Bay took 4mm 37 l-ssec for his two miles, the last half-mile in Imin 2 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 2-ssec. At no stage of his run did he appear to reach top speed. The Auckland pacer looks in great heart for the National Handicap on the second day of the meeting. He will start from 42 yards and will probably be favourite again.
Carina Star and Florita finished together at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 15 4-ssec, the last half-
mile in Im in 3sec, and the final quarter in 31 l-ssec. Carina Star was driven by R. Young, who will handle him in the Canterbury Challenge Stakes on Saturday. Carina Star looks improved as a result of his sixth to the Four-year-old Stakes last Saturday. Florita will be bracketed with Avante in the Wildwood Handicap, the second leg of the double on Saturday. Meadow' Scott and Vanderford finished together at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 21 3-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 3 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 31sec. Vanderford will be a commanding favourite for the Farewell Handicap after his stylish win last Saturday. Meadow Scott has made good progress recently and will make a fresh start in the Wildwood Handicap. Robin Dundee and Procella finished on terms and appeared to be pacing well within themselves at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 28sec, the last half-mile in Imin 4 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 l-ssec. Procella will contest the Farewell Handicap, a sprint race, on Saturday. He w’as a good sixth on the first day of the meeting and should be improved as a result of the run. Robin Dundee paced a splendid race for fourth in the Louisson Handicap after giving the leader a long start from the three furlongs. She looks favourably placed on the front in the National Handicap this week. The Trentham three-year-old, Victura, worked easily on his own over one mile and a half in 3min 24sec. the last half-mile in Imin 4sec, and the final quarter in the smart time of 30sec. Victura, a gelding by Meadow Chief, has a big private reputation and interest will be taken in his showing in the Canterbury Challenge Stakes. He looks to be well forward.
