PROMISING COLT
Matamata Trial Winner "The Press" Special Service MATAMATA, Aug. 19. Some very smart young horses were seen out at the Mia’.amata trials today. The Tip the Bottle colt, which won at the recent Te Awatnutu trials, was very impressive in taking the second heart tor two-year-olds, and Shady Lane easily won the first. Palanga and an unnamed Final Court gelding did best of the older horses, but there were several impressive ones. Shady Lane, a neat grey filly by Byland from Placate, easily won the fust heat tor two-year-olds, running the two furlongs in 25 2-ssec easing up. She is owned by Mr McDonell and trained tor hiim by R. J. Campbell at Matamata. This combination has done well with Old Parr. This filly is a half-sister to that good galloper, but a much earliermaturing type. Unwanted, a neat filly by Duccio—Royal Vesta, was a length away second in front of Tiki Belle and Fortitude. They may take more time. Both ran on well. Tiki Belle is a half-sister to Tiki Fox and Tiki Jet by Zarabandia and Fortitude, is a strong brown gelding by Summertime from Sequence, and a close relative of Exeter. The unnamed Tip the Bottle—Princess Filou colt was interfered, with just after the release in the second heat, when another horse jumped sideways. He made up the ground, and without apparent effort won going away by a neck in 24 4-ssec, a bold gallop on a dead track. A big gelding by Le Filou from Nano Nagle was second ahead of Landby. by Byland—Exception, which did not seem too happy in the ground and did not go as well as when he won easily at Te Awamutu Sterling Castle ran on for fourth. He is a big Super gelding and a brother to Riglaw.
