TECHNICAL GOES DOWN

Old Boys Held To Draw Technical Old Boys failed in their bid to escape relegation from the premier soccer division. Faced with the uphill task of beating Nomads, this year’s national Chatham Cup finalists, the Old Boys could only draw one goal each in the final match of the HurleyShield competition at English Park on Saturday. Technical needed to gam the two points from a victory to go above Christchurch City in the league table, and until 12 minutes from the end they looked like succeeding. They were leading 1-0 through the goal by the centre-forward. D. Waugh when fine combination between R. Muirson and B Gowans split open the Technical defence, and Gowans finished off the movement with a hard shot into the roof of the goal. It was unlucky for Technical that this goal had to seal their fate. They had more than held their own with Nomads, and had shown greater penetration and determination for longer periods. However, the fight-back came too late—two months too late. Had Technical played equally determined football throughout the season they would not have been in their present position. As to be expected, after the previous Saturday's fine win at Dunedin, when they won the South Island final of the Chatham Cup, Nomads were more relaxed. With the HurleyShield championship already theirs they had only the incentive of retaining an unbeater record. This they did. but not convincingly. Play rarely rose above mediocrity, and the spice was provided only by Technical After they took the lead four minutes from the restart, having weathered a rather torrid first half, they swept into the attack to put the position beyond doubt. The Nomads goal came under constant bombardment. tire Nomads defence was forced into jittery, panicky clearances, but the final touch from a Technical plaver never materialised. although there were some close shaves. The man who might have won the match for Technical was the left-wing W Logan. In fact, he wriggled his way along the gal-lire to produce the first goal, and came close to reneatirg the .performance. Bu’ he was not given the ball often enough when it became obvious that his wing was the only threat to Nomads.
