LAWN TENNIS OPAWA KEEPS LEAD IN WINTER CONTEST
Opawa retained its lead in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's winter inter-club competition at Wilding Park yesterday when it beat Redcliffs by 5 matches to 1 in the seventh round at Wilding Park.
Beckenham, one of the teams which was second, lost its position when it was beaten by Avonside I by 50 games to 39 when each had won three matches. St. Albans beat South Christchurch by 6 matches to 0 and this left it in second position on its own. In the other contests Avonside II beat Avonside 111 by 6 matches to 0 and University beat Sumner by 43 games to 40. The points are: Opawa 7, St. Albans 6, Avonside I 5, Beckenham 5. Avonside II 4, South Christchurch 3. University 2, Sumner 2, Redcliffs 1, Avonside HI 0. Avonside I v. Beckenham Men's Doubles.—D. McNicol and J. Edgar lost to W. Davis and H. Gover, 3-6. 2-6. Women's Doubles.—Mesdames B. McNicol and L. Rixon beat Misses M. P. Shanahan and J. Coombs, 6-1, 6-2. Mixed Doubles. —Edgar and Mrs Rixon lost to Gover and Miss Shanahan, 8-9: Edgar and Mrs Rixon beat Davis and Miss Coombs, 9-0; McNicol and Mrs McNicol beat Davis and Miss Coombs, 9-6; McNicol and Mrs McNicol lost to Gover and Miss Shanahan, 7-9. Avonside won by 59 games to 39. St. Albans v. South Christchurch Men's Doubles.—R. D. Wright and F. Teear beat R. Whitley and Purves, 6-0 6-0. Women's Doubles.—Mesdames P. Robinson and M. Teear won by default. Mixed Doubles.—Wright and Mrs Robinson beat Whitley and Miss Kirton, 9-3; Teear and Mrs Teear beat Purves and Mrs Nation. 9-0; Wright and Mrs Robinson beat Purves and Mrs Nation, 9-4; Teear and Mrs Teear beat Whitley and Miss Kirton. 9-1.
