Friend Also Scalded (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, August 18. A five-year-old boy is in the Rotorua Hospital with scalds he suffered when I he made a brave, but unsuccessful bid to rescue a playmate who was killed when he fell into an Chinemutu boiling pool on Friday afternoon Wiremu Porter was scalded on the arms and chest and stomach when he partly fell into the pool trying to rescue his friend The friend was Arthur Raymond Thomas Welsh, aged three, son of Mrs M Bidois. Ohinemutu. Wiremu's condition this morning was satisfactory. With another friend, the children were playing near a 3ft wide, 2ft deep boiling pool in the Te Anakiwi area at Ohinemutu when Arthur Welsh slipped into the pool. Wiremu also partly slipped into the pool when he tried to rescue his friend. He then ran 100 yards to his home and told his mother: “Mummy. I have been burnt" A neighbour who was immersing flax in a nearby pool, was attracted by the noise and raced over to the pool. She pulled the boy out but he was dead. The pool, which is unfenced and unused, lies in a small depression surrounded by banks of manuka.
