Violent Quakes In South America

SANTIAGO (Chile), Aug. 16 Earthquakes Jolted Chilean and Peruvian towns along a strip 1500 miles long yesterday, the British United Press reported. No casualties were reported.
From 1.30 p.m. a series ol tremors were felt for the nex> four hours in points as widely separated as Lima, Peru, and Puerto Mouth, south of Santiago, Chile.
The Associated Press reported from Lima, Peru, that two violent earth tremors had shaken the city of Huaraz '250 miles north of Lima, yes terday. Minor damage was caused to some houses, but no casualties were reported. Later in the day, a sliglv tremor shook Arequipa, 600 miles south of Lima, without causing damage. Strong earthquake tremors shook Guayaquil and other towns in Ecuador yesterday causing panic but no damage or casualties Several North American seismographs reported a very strong earthquake yesterday near the Peru-Ecuador border
A spokesman at a Canadian Government observatory said it would cause “great disturbance” on the surface, and a University of California
seismograph rated it at the same level as the famous San Francisco earthquake in 1906 The Boston College seismograph in Weston, Massachusetts recorded "a very severe earthquake” at 533 a.m. -riday (New Zeeland time). A spokesman said it was believed to have ocurred in the area of the PeruEcuador border. The University of California seismograph at Berkeley statred recording the schock at 535 a m. It had a strength of 8.25 on the Richter scale and was still being recorded an hour later In Wellington, the seismological department of the DSI.R. said recording of an earthquake began at 5 38 a m today, and large waves were arriving and being recorded three hours later The estimated magnitude on the Richter scale was 7 2 New Skopje Quake A strong earthquake today hit Skopje, the Macedonian capital, which exactly three weeks ago was destroyed by a devastating earthquake Belgrade Radio reported that the population fled from its tents in panic, but there were no reports on damage The earthquake was said to be of six-degree strength or. the 12-degree scale It was the strongest earthquake registered since July 26 when the city was destroyed
