JUDICIAL WHIPPING
Sex Offence Penalty (N Z Press Assnt—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 16 A Judge today ordered a whipping for a 38-year-old man who had indecently assaulted his daughter. The father, Alexander Gordon Graham, a sheetmetal worker, had appeared before Judge Curlewis in February, 1959, charged with the carnal knowledge of his eldest daughter, then aged 10. The Judge told Graham then that, if ever he came before him again on a similar charge he would order a whipping, and he gave Graham a bond. Graham was arrested in January for a similar assault on his second daughter, aged 11. He pleaded guilty to indecent assault on March 22, and was sentenced to three years’ gaol. Today he appeared before ■Judge Curlewis for breach of the bond occasioned by he second assault. In addition to ordering the whipping, Judge Curlewis sentenced Graham to two years’ imprisonment to be served at the expiration of his present sentence He ordered Graham to be privately whipped—not more than 10 strokes —at a time and place to be set down by the Comptroller of Prisons.
Graham’s counsel said an appeal would be lodged against the whipping order
