ANTARCTIC STUDY
Award To City Journalist The chief reporter of “The Press,” Mr J. M. Caffin, has been awarded a United States State Department foreign specialist’s grant to study the Antarctic planning operations of the United States Navy and scientific work being done at American universities under the auspices of the National Science Foundation. Mr Caffin, who is on leave in Britain, will spend a month in the United States
on his way back to New Zealand studying Antarctic naval support force activities, and scientific work in the universities. Mr Caffin’s interest in the Antarctic dates back to 1934 when he was associated with Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd. Since American Antarctic operations began from Christchurch eight years ago he visited the Antarctic in 1959 and 1961. He is a member of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, and of the American Polar Society. While in England he has spent some time at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge.
