School - Building Budget Of £9.7m.

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 9. Two new teachers’ colleges are included in the budget of £9.7 million for the 1963-64 school-building programme, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) announced today. Of this, £4.75 million will be administered by the education boards.

“The new work proposed includes 40 primary and nine intermediate schools which, with additions to existing schools, means 705 new classrooms,” Mr Tennent said. “Since the total includes replacements for sub-standard and temporary rooms, this means a net gain of 390 primary and intermediate classrooms.” In addition, 66 specialist teaching rooms were provided for and two new Maori primary schools. Five new post-primary schools, as well as one new district high school, were planned, representing 765 new classrooms (including additions to existing schools). Replacements amounted tc 326 rooms, thus giving a net gain of 439. Nineteen assembly halls al existing post-primary schools as well as three for intermediate schools were also planned. “Two new teachers’ training colleges have been bud-

geted for, one at Karori, Wellington, and the new North Shore college," Mr Tennent said. “Both of these will ultimately take up to 750 students under the proposed three-year training scheme. A third college, already building at Hamilton, under last year’s programme and providing for 450 students at the moment, also will be expanded to accommodate 750 as the third year of training is introduced. “Two hostels for training college students are scheduled, one at Palmerston ' North for women and a new block to replace sub-standard accommodation at Carrington Hall, Dimedin.
