COPING WITH POOR BOOKS
Discussion In Classroom (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, August 2. Teachers should deal with trash literature in the classrooms, said Mr W. J. Scott, principal of the Wellington Teachers’ College, in Hamilton last night, “Acknowledge its existence,” he said. “Bring it out and discuss it in the classroom, Try to understand the child’s need to read it.” Mr Scott was giving an address on the censorship of literature and the teaching of English at a meeting of the Hamilton English Association. A bold, head-on attack was the way to defeat the detrimental influences of trash literature.
“Corrupting influences of poor literature have never been legally proven,” said Mr Scott.
The most apparent effect was the negative one of obstruction; teachers found it hard to over-ride poorer literature In favour of better works.
