TROTTING W.E. Lowe Preparing For Spring Campaign

This season’s leading owner, the Hinds trainer, W. E. Lowe, should get away to a good start for the 1963-64 term. He will have his four outstanding winners Cairnbrae, Urrall, Grouse and Peel—racing at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting at Addington next month.

In addition, Lowe will have Lyndhurst, Lagmhor, Anama and Trusted ready for other early spring meetings, while he has a large number of young horses in work being prepared for qualifying trials early in the season.

Cairnbrae, Urrall and Peel will be candidates for the Louisson Handicap, the feature race on the first day at Addington, while Grouse will no doubt contest the Lightning Handicap, an invitation sprint race that day. All four pacers will be eligible to compete in the National Handicap, an invitation race over 13 furlongs on the second day of the meeting, while Peel will also be eligible for the Wildwood Handicap that day. Cairnbrae was one of the outstanding pacers raced this season. He gained eight wins and won £4170 in stakes. Five of his wins were gained from C. S. Donald's Belfast stables. Unfortunately, he became a little wayward at the barrier after a race accident. A spell away from racing might have restored his confidence and

his racing next month will be followed with interest. Urrall, like Cairnbrae, needs one distance win to qualify for the New Zealand Cup. He won three races and £3860 in stakes this season. Probably his best effort was his second to Falsehood in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at the Wellington Royal meeting. At times he was a little disappointing, but he looks as though he will still be- a sound proposition during the next 12 months. Grouse won six races and £4495 in stakes this season. She showed sound form over all distances but appeared to be at her best up to 13 furlongs. However, a solid two miles should be well within her reach and in November she will make a second attempt on the New Zealand Cup. Last November she tangled and lost her chance at the start. Improver Peel, one of the most promising pacers seen this season, won six races and £3450 in stakes He requires two distance wins to be correctly placed on the front of the New Zealand Cup. If he comes up as well as expected he could well reach cup class before November. Lyndhurst gained three wins this season and showed

himself to be a highly promising three-year-old. His best win was in the Queen's Birthday Stakes at Ashburton, an effort which confirmed the high opinion formed of him when he first started racing. Lyndhurst might race at Hutt Park or New Brighton and then he will have plenty of racing to suit him at the bigger country meetings. “Small” Winners Anama and Trusted were comparatively small winners this season, but both won more than £5OO. At times they went well enough to suggest that they were capable of further ‘wins. Lowe also has five rising three-year-olds in his team. One is a colt by Light Brigade from Autumn Sky, a half-sister by Springfield Globe to Merval. A gelding by Adorian from Tralleborg is also well-related Tralleborg was got by U. Scott from Mistral, a daughter of Wrack and Trix Pointer. A gelding by Adorian is the first foal of a cup-class mare in Merval. The other two rising three-year-olds are fillies by Brahman One is out of Colmar, an unraced mare by U. Scott from Molly Direct, the dam of Globe Direct and others. The other is out of Inverary. the dam also of Urrall.
