Boxing HAGEN BEATS LIDDLE
Tame Bout At Invercargill (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, July 29. Dennis Hagen, an Invercargill welter-weight boxer (list Ulb), scored his second win over Bobby Liddle, of Melbourne (lOst 101 b), by beating him on points in a 10-round bout at Invercargill tonight. It was a tame bout for toe most part. Hagen carried the fight to his opponent and fully earned the decision. Liddle looked dangerous in two or three rallies, but his nonchalance in defending himself against a battery of scoring punches cost him dearly. The first fight in the double-bill programme was little more than a fiasco. Johnny Henderson (list 111 b). beat Taffy Matthews, of Christchurch (list 101 b) on a technical knock-out in toe third round. Henderson was all over his opponent and the crowd welcomed the referee’s action in halting the fight. Nothing poorer has been seen in Invercargill in 40 years. Matthews, a Queenslander, had toe physique, but not the ability. He was too slow to avoid Henderson, who had many chances to knock out his man, but there appeared to be little power in his punches.
