BRITAIN AND E.E.C.
“Union Needed For Stability” (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. July 29. The British High Commissioner in New Zealand, Sir Francis Cumming - Bruce, spoke in Auckland tonight of a widespread feeling that no long-term stability could be achieved for Europe until Britain took her place in the European Economic Community. He said on his return after two months overseas that this feeling was evident in England and also among the present six member countries of the E EC.
Sir Francis Cumming-Bruce spent a month in Britain. He visited Malta and then continued to Kenya. Northern and Southern Rhodesia. South Africa, and Japan. He also attended the Singapore conference of British diplomats concerned with final arrangements for the establishment of Malaysia. “On the whole,” he said, “they have gone well.” Toward the end of this year, he will relinquish his present post to become High Commissioner in Nigeria. “As one of the largest and most stable countries in Africa.” he said, “Nigeria can play a considerable part in relation to the stability of the whole continent.
“I hope she may be able to be helpful in the difficult times that undoubtedly lie ahead for both east and central Africa in arrangements for independence.”
