JOYCE MEMORIAL OBSERVATORY

Societies Disagree On Plan The laying of the foundation stone for the R. F. Joyce Memorial Observatory to be built at West Melton, scheduled for next Saturday, has been postponed. The Canterbury Astronomical Society and the Royal New Zealand .Astronomical Society have not been able to agree on the plan of the building.

The president of the Canterbury society (Mr P. J. Alley) has resigned after a difference within the society over the proposals for the project.

Mr Joyce made a joint bequest to the societies to build an observatory to track artificial satellites. ‘The two societies mu*t agree before any project is launched." said the aecretary of the Canterbury society (Mr S. F. Phipps). "We thought the New Zealand society would agree with our plans, but it has differed on the exact nature of the observatory to be built” Members of the Canterbury society will plant trees, which they have given, on the site in Bells road on Saturday afternoon.
