Soccer SELECTOR’S PROBLEM
Seeking Order Of Priority
Recognising the difficulties faced by its senior provincial selector over prior calls on representative players, the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association is to seek an order of priority for national, provincial and club fixtures from the council of the New Zealand Football Association. The matter was brought before the committee last night by Mr R. Storer, who claimed that it was of greater advantage today to be a club selector than to be a representative selector He said the task of the senior selector (Mr V. Smith I would be made considerably easier if fixtures were listed tn order of preference. Last season Mr Smith had started a gentlemen's agreemen by not selecting for Canterbury players who were involved in matches in the Rothman's tournament, said Mr Storer. Now the agreement had boomeranged on him—he obtained only those players who were left over. The secretary (Mr E. H. Williams) suggested that the order of preference should be:—New Zealand matches. Chatham Cup. Junior National Cup. Rothmans tournament, provincial games and club matches Mr T C. Gottermeyer said clubs could appeal to the NewZealand council against any order of preference drawn up by the Canterbury body, but Mr Storer said this could be circumvented by the association first obtaining a ruling from the council. The draw for the first round of the English Cup competition. the matches to be played next month, is:
Western v. City: Shamrock v New Brighton: Technical Old Bovs and Nomads byes.
The South Island final of the Junior National Cup (under 18) competition, between Otago and Canterbury, will be played at Dunedin on August 3.
