JAMBOREE IN GREECE
N.Z. Party To Leave Today Twenty-nine New Zealand boy scouts and seven scouters headed by Mr G. A. T. Rhodes, of Timaru, will attend the tenth world jamboree at Marathon Bay, near Athens, next month. The contingent will leave Wellington by air today. The jamboree will be held from August 1, to August 11. Each boy has had to either raise his own fare of £450 or be sponsored by his local group.
After the jamboree, the boys will spend some days in Greece and then travel to London, visiting a number of European cities on the way. They will have nearly a month in Britain before returning to Auckland in October by the United States
The site of the jamboree is that of the historic BaKle of Marathon in 490 B.C. Tht sub-camps of the jamboree will be named after the Greek troops who fought and defeated 100,000 Persians, although they themselves numbered only 11,000. The leader of the New Zealand contingent is district
commissioner of the Tui district for the Canterbury area, Mr Rhodes. He served with the New Zealand forces in Greece during the Second World War.
