PLUNKET WORK
More Support To Be Sought To interest more women in Plunket work, public meetings are to be held, at New Brighton on July 30 and at North Beach on August 19. it was announced at a recent meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society. Both subbranches had a very small number of women on the Plunket committees. the meeting was told. Miss J. Scott, at present Plunket nurse at Kaiapoi, has been appointed to the Christchurch branch. She will commence duty on September 2. The charge sister, Miss B. Helliwell. reported the following figures for June: birth notifications, 319; new baby cases, 260; visits of babies to rooms, 2633; preschool children examined. 798; babies seen in their homes, 1962.
Figures for the Karitane Hospital were reported by the matron (Miss N. Fisher) as follows; mothers admitted 10; discharged 12; daily average 4.93; babies admitted 31: discharged 31; daily average 29.66; twins admitted four pairs; premature babies admitted nine; ■ premature babies still in hospital nine. The Karitane Bureau secretary reported that 30 mothers had received help from Karitane nurses during the month. The selection committee had approved eight applicants for Karitane nursing training.
Kaiapoi Sub-branch
The Kaiapoi sub-branch of the Plunket Society was congratulated on its sound financial position by the president of the Christchurch branch (Mrs W. M. Peryer), who presided at the annual meeting of the sub-branch. The following officers were elected: Patrons, Dr. C. F. McKee, Mrs C. T. Williams; president, Mrs D. H. Blackwell; vice-presidents, Mesdames B. Williams, N. Honey, R. D. Evans, A. R. Hall; secretary, Mrs I. J. Corich; treasurer, Mrs J. J. Highsted; assistant treasurer, Mrs J. Robertson; committee. Mesdames L Oram, H. L Williams, C. Storer, C. Merrin, G. McQuillan, B. D. Gebbie, H. Smith, M. J. Power, T. Fenwick, M. Wareing, M. Kennett, J. McKenzie, G. Ching. R. Ward, C. Murray, S. Hitchens, J. R. Hide.
