REBUILDING PLANNED
Madras Street Overbridge
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 22.
The rebuilding of the Madras street overbridge is to commence immediately, according to the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine). He said in Parliament today that concrete piles for pier foundations would be on the site this week, and that the work would be pushed to completion at the earliest possible date. He was replying to an urgent question by Miss M. B. Howard (Opposition, Sydenham), who asked whether the Minister would reopen the bridge across the railways yards from Moorhouse avenue to Carlyle street until such time as other means of access was provided. “The Madras street overbridge is in a dangerous condition," Mr McAlpine said. “I cannot accept responsibility for its continued use.”
