More than 200 extreme Left-wing political detainees in Kuching today began a hunger strike at their detention camps. Their aim is to obtain trial.
All the prisoners are being held without trial under the Preservation of Public Security Ordinance At a political rally in Kuching last night, leaders of the Sarawak United People's Party, to which many of the detainees belong, announced the hunger strike decision and urged the Government to bring the detainees to trial immediately. Relatives of the detainees gathered at the party headquarters in Kuching this morning.
Many of the detainees are imprisoned in a camp across the river.
A correspondent visited the camp this morning, but was prevented from speaking to the inmates. He learned from guards that they were surprised to see on the walls of the wooden buildings this morning slogans scrawled in large characters in English, Chinese and Romanised Malay.
One slogan read: ”We stage a 48-hours hunger strike in protest against political tortures and all totalitarian measures." Another said: “We strongly protest against being handcuffed." A riot squad consisting of Malayan police is now guarding the detention camp.
