July 22 A 33-year-old white woman was sentenced to 12 months' gaol by a Cape Town court today for talking to the man she loves The Magistrate suspended 11 months of the sentence conditionally for three years The woman. Gillian Jewell, was found guilty on two charges of breaking an order prohibiting her from communicating with anyone appearing on the Ministry of Justice’s banned persons list. She admitted twice visiting David Tarshish. who was sentenced to 12 years’ gaol in Cape Town last May for sabotage She said she and Tarshish loved each other and planned o marry. She had obtained oermission from warders to see him
Passing sentence, the Magistrate said it was clear Jewell and Tarshish had not discussed any contentious matters, but Jewell was well aware she had no right to communicate with him
The woman filed an immediate appeal and was released on £5O bail
