RACING Waverley Eased And Melodic Non Starter

Melodic will not run in the Brabazon Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. His trainer, I. McClure, said yesterday that the Kurdistan gelding has progressed well in training since his win at Washdyke and would not need another race before the Winter Cup.

McClure has not had the same fortune with Waverley. This promising sprinter strained a ligament recently and has been eased in his work. He will not be fit for racing at the Grand National meeting.

After a fourth on the second day of the Wellington winter meeting, Waverley would have been a form runner in sprint races at the Riccarton carnival.

Caplin, another member of the McClure team, was one of the moat impresaive of the two-year-old* in barrier trials on the five-furlong course at R.ccarton yesterday. Caplin, ridden by D. N. Hadfield, was in front alongside Flashes*. (Beck) and just ahead of Bunker (Martin) ending one of the heats. W. D. Skelton will ride Caplin in the Haldon Stakes on Saturday. This filly has not yet raced. She is by Dogger Bank from Fleur, and could be very useful. Apache Wins

Two members of P. H Jones's team were impressive winners of two earlier barrier trials.

First home in the first heat was Apache. With N. Eastwood up, this Camla Hack Handicap candidate finished clear of Mhor (Hadfield), which made ground late on the inside to shade the two-year-old, Valuate (Beck), and Payout (Brunning). Last Count was fifth, and also impressive. A. H. Eastwood eased him when a clear second about a furlong out. Now that Melodic is to miss .the Brabazon Handicap. Hadfield will probably ride Mhor. Omasong, also with N. Eastwood up, showed speed and dash in beating Manana (Stokes) and several others easily.

Manana finished clear of Clipper (Swanson), which was followed in by Canadiana and Katrine (Hadfield).

Omasong. a winner as a two-year-old this season, is being prepared for races at the Grand National meeting.

Royal Mile (Mein) and Yosemite (F. H. Skelton) were first home in another barrier sprint. They finished clear of Marlow (Cowles) and then there was another gap to Standout (Stokes). Yosemite was tried in a hood; he has been racing poorly. Vitamise Fit In the work done on the No. 6 grass, which was soft, none was more impressive than the Brabazon Handicap candidate. Vitamise. N. Eastwood had this smart sprinter on the outside of Melody

Maid (L. Williams) and Paua (Beck), and under a strong hold, while running six furlongs in 1:24 2-5, the last three in 41 1-5.

Vitamise has a very good record up to a mile, and should make a big impression during the campaign he starts on Saturday.

Earlier, when the footing was better. Apparel (M. J. Skelton) sprinted six furlongs in 1:24 1-5. It was a smart solo trial, and showed Apparel's fitness for immediate engagements.

Apparel makes a fresh start in the Camla Hack Handicap on Saturday. The Southland mare Shan-gri-La (C. T. Wilson) ran half a mile in 54 3-5, and was keen to quicken. She has freshened since her unsuccessful campaign at Trentham. She is under the care of the Riccarton trainer, R. Preece, in the meantime.

Keep (Miss L. Kearns) and Navarone (Beck) recorded 1:24 4-5 for six furlongs. Later, Roa (Messent) and Foxy Boy (N. Eastwood) recorded 1:25 1-5, and Scribbler and Golden Vanity took 1:25. Shakes (Messent) and Brown Brocade (Daley) recorded 1:11 for five furlongs after running the opening two easily in 29 1-5.

Shakes is one of the strong fancies for the Camla Hack Handicap on Saturday. Dotterel (C. M. Williams) kept up a solid pace and jumped brilliantly in a run over 10 fences on the trial steeplechase course. None should shade him for jumping ability in the Lawford Hack and Hunters’ Steeples on Saturday, and he should take beating if he does not pull hard early. C. M. Williams, who is an amateur horseman, will ride Dotterel on Saturday.

Super View (M. Walther) jumped seven fences, and his display was only fair. Magonza (Coulter) jumped six hurdles without impressing.
