The Yale Lock

Sir, —In this morning’s issue it is reported that the inventor of the Yale lock, a Mr Bacon, died in Wellington last week. Unfortunately New Zealand cannot claim such credit. The Yale lock was invented by Linus Yale, an American, in 1884. It was a modification of a lock used by the ancient Egyptians. Such a lock was discovered in the ruins of Nineveh. Since 1884 many improvements have been made, some on the suggestion of people not connected with the firm. Possibly Mr Bacon can be credited with such a suggestion but be certainly did not invent the Yale lock.—Yours, etc., HY STURGE. July 22, 1963.
