Apartheid In Sport
Sir, —“J.C.” is, I believe, correct in emphasising the strength of soccer in South Africa, especially among the non-white section of the population, but non-white sportsmen do not confine themselves to one winter spoilt any more than their white counter-parts. “J.C.” is also correct in asserting that the Springbok Rugby teams consist only of white players. The South African Rugby body with which New Zealand and Australia exchange tours is exclusively white, operating a rigid colour bar. South African Rugby teams, like their Rugby League equivalents, are selected so as to embody the principle of apartheid, thus violating a basic requirement of good sportsmanship. As players from the African and Coloured Rugby unions are excluded on racial grounds from selection n Springbok Rugby sides, these teams are no more representative of South Africa than an exclusively white All Black team is representative of New Zealand —Yours, etc., RICHARD THOMPSON.
