TROTTING C. L. Rhodes To Race Four Horses In Sydney

Four pacers raced by Mr C. L. Rhodes, of Christchurch, are to join L. G. Chant’s Sydney team. All four have been branded and will leave for Sydney in about a week. They will be accompanied by the trotter, Donnybrook, which was purchased by Chant some weeks ago.

The four pacers are Consultant, Chief Adviser; Freeland and Yale. They are all young and apart from Yale they are eligible for maiden races. They will have almost unlimited opportunities in the Sydney area in the next; few months.

The difficulty ofobtaining sufficient races for slow-class horses in Canterbury, where unwieldy fields and heavy balloting are common, has been the main reason which influenced Mr Rhodes to send these horses to Australia.

A high opinion is held of the rising three-year-old. Consultant, and if he races up to expectations, it is possible that he will be returned to New Zealand for races such as the New Zealand Derby Stakes in November.

Consultant is a gelding by Meadow Chief from Our Advice, a Light Brigade mare belonging to an outstanding winning family, which includes Thelma Globe, Pacing Praver, Horsepower, Invicta, and others. He had only two starts towards the end of the

. present season, and alt the second of them he finished a useful sixth in the two-year-old Pacing Stakes at Addington on May 25. Chief Adviser is a rising five-year-bld, lightly-raced brother to Consultant. He had three starts late in the season after qualifying impressively. At his second appearance he paced a splendid rpce to finish third to Rannack Song and Stormy Prince at Ashburton on May 31. He looks an outstanding prospect for an early win in Australia. Showed Promise Freeland showed promise in her racing and really went much better than her record of three platings from 10 starts suggests. Her best placing was a second to Sdngaway at Greymoutih in January. Freeland is a rising four-year-old mare by Light Brigade from Freefleld, the dam also of Merry Gold, Runfree, Sangro, and Shade. Yale, a rising four-year-old gelding by Secure from Isidoros, a daughter of Light Brigade and Bel Hamed, won twice this season, his best effort be frig at Hutt Park in April when he was successful over two miles. He impresses as a potential topclass stayer. He will meet fairly strong opposition in Sydney, but will have plenty of races to suit him. Donnybrook, which did his early racing in Southland, raced in the interests of Mr R. A. McKenzie, of Wellingtop. this season. He failed to win a race, but was 10 times placed from 19 starts. He is usually most reliable and will have plenty of opportunities in the weak trotting classes he will contest in Sydney. He is a rising 10-year-old brother by Free Fight to Flying Maiden and Halberg. Auckland Profit After providing £2990 for taxation and £7335 for depreciation, a profit of £6332 is shown in the accounts of the Auckland Trotting Club. Gate receipts during the years amounted to £34,018, while nomination and acceptance fees amounted to £9964.

Use Of. Hickory The qualities of hickory in the manufacture of sulkies,

compared with New Zealand timbers, was the subject of discussion ait the annual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference. Tests and demonstrations made by a leading sulky builder proved that there was no substitute for hickory for durability, to say nothing of safety. Voting Polling for three South Island vacancies on the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference resulted: -Mr H. J. Hewson, of Kaikoura, 35; Mr C. E. Hoy. of Christchurch, 39; Mr A. J. Nicoll, of Ashburton, 29; and Mir C. E. Larsen, of Dunedin, 20. Only 41 voting papers were received, no votes being received from the Masterton or Thames clubs. Special Meeting The New Zealand Horsemen’s Association will hold a special general meeting next Monday to consider the decision not to pay losing driving fees to trainers made at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference in Wellington on July 11. Twenty-two votes were cast in favour and 22 against a remit, sponsored by the Franklin Trotting Club, to have losing driving fees paid to trainers. 66 Qualified Sixty-six horses qualified during the season at trials ran by the Mid-Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, according to the report of the president (Mir M. C. McTigue) which will be presented at the annual meeting on August 5. A total of 343 horses had been nominated for the trials. The association showed a profit of £195 on its operations and its accumulated funds now stand at £1563. U.S. Foals Records of the United States Trotting Association show that 6068 light-harness foals were born in the United States in 1962. Ohio, with 1247 foals, recorded the largest number of foal registrations of any state, being well ahead of New York with 753. Ohio has produced the largest number of foals in each of the 25 years in which the association has been keeping accurate records.

Kentucky, with 372 foals, finished seventh on the list. The states of Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Montana, Idaho and Louisiana failed to register any feelings.

Trotting Move.—A move to have trotting established in Hawke’s Bay is under way with the formation in Hastings at the week-end of an interim committee to go into the proposal.—(P.A.)
