P. G. SNELL DOUBTFUL
Cross-Country Title (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 22. Because of an inability to pursue his training programme in recent weeks. P. G. Snell is uncertain whether he will defend his New Zealand cross-country title in two weeks. Snell admitted to be “running hard all the way” when he was. outsprinted for eleventh place in the Auckland championships at Cornwall Park, He said afterwards he had agreed provisionally to his name going forward for the New Zealand championships, but that he would have to consider his form further before deciding to start. Snell said that he had been unable to train while engaged in recent weeks on lecture tours for his firm.
N. Read To Try Again
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 22. The Olympic gold medallist for walking, Norman Read, said in New Plymouth today he would make an effort to get into the New Zealand team for the Olympics at Tokyo next year. Up to nine weeks ago he was running 100 miles a week in a programme for fitness but through pressure of business he has not been able to put in full training. Read plans to step up his training in running until the middle of August to bring his fitness to a peak before starting walking again.
