M. L. COOKE’S POSITION

Coach Gives Reasons “The Press” Special Service SYDNEY, July 1. Mr G. Plant (manager) and Mr W. Telford (coach), of the touring Kiwi Rugby League team disagreed with remarks made by Mr C. Churchill, coach of Australia, that in the third test they had made a tactical error in playing the loose forward, M. L. Cooke, at halfback on Saturday. Mr Plant said they had no alternative but to put Cooke into half-back when the star “pivot” W. L. Snowden, was not available because of an ankle injury. “We gave this question a lot of thought for three and four days before the test” said Mr Telford.

“Mr Churchill had said that half-back was a specialist position and that New Zealand should have played a specialist there; but we had no-one up to standard to take over as specialist

“We could have been worse off if we had put someone in there who had not been capable,” Mr Telford said.
