CYCLING Front-Mark Winners In Amateur Races

In each of the three amateur cycling club races on Saturday the winner was from the front mark, but in the cash code the scratch riders disputed the major placing;,. In all races a challenge cup was at stake. CHRISTCHURCH CASH CLUB K. Jeffery. riding trom •cratch, overshadowed his comarker, F Hooper, to win the Christchurch Cash Cycling Club H. Cations rosebowl. He also took fastest tune. The race, of 32 miles, was over a block course of 16 miles at Halswell With five miles to go. all bunches except for the leaders. L Arnst. C. Willcox, and E. Shaw, were together. The leaders held a two-minute advantage over the rest of the field, and it appeared as if they might retain their lead. A little less than two miles from the finish, the leaders were caught by the main bunch. The final sprint was very fast. K. Jeffery just held on to Win narrowly from F. Hooper R. AVON CLUB P Wildermoth. riding from the limit won the Vic. Chaney Memorial Cup in the Avon Cycling Club's 35-mile out and borne event at Yakihurst. Wildermoth and his co-marker. E Hamden, set a very fast pace from the start, and as the race progressed it appeared as if these two were going to keep well away from the bunches chasing them. R Fowler and C. Farrant. off 6min, made determined efforts to gain on the leaders. At the turn they had only the leaders in front of them.

A. little after West Melton. Wildermoth went away on his own. Barnden was picked up by Fowler and Farrant and they caught Wildermoth two miles from the finish. Wildermoth had plenty in reserve and in the final sprint went aw-ay to beat Fowler by one second One second separated Farrant and Barnden. who finished third and fourth. G. Painter had a two-second margin for fastest time over his co-marker, G Sword, for fastest time Results were:— P Wildermoth (16min), lAlj. 1; R. R. McGrath 3. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB The brilliant junior. D Gutrv. had too much strength for his opponents in the clubs 45-mile scratch race for the Hartnell Cup. Tlie race was a stiff one from Halswell to the top of Gebbies Pass and return. One the return five riders formed the leading bunch and they stayed together to the finish when only two seconds separated them. Riding from the limit mark of 17min for the 35 miles, he- won bv 200 yards. Simon s brother. G Simon, rode trom the same

mark but near the finish he dropped back with cramp. They rode exceptionally well throughout the race to hold off a determined bid by. the 6min riders. P. Skilling, W. Kendall and G. Stanley. The break riders. B. Hack. J. Cleary, and P. Walford teamed well throughout the whole race and their effort gave them a 30sec advantage over the scratch men at the finish. In the sprint for time honours, Hack won by a narrow margin. Resuits were:— B. Simon (17min) 2:7.54, 1: P. Skilling (6min) 1:57.15. 2; G. Stanley (6min) 1:57.15.2, 3; W Kendall (6min) 1:57.15.4, 4. Fastest time: B. Hack (2jmin) 1:55.10. NOVICE EVENTS Mairehau Club The 13j-mile handicap event was won by the limit rider. K. Sword, who had the lead throughout. The longer distance proved that many riders needed training for longer races and there were some withdrawals when only half the distance was covered. Results were:— K. Sword 1, M. Stainger 2, B. Wilkinson 3. Time 39:52. Fastest time: B. Thorpe (scr) 35:16. Papanui Club G. Armstrong did not have enough in reserve for the last 500 yards in the 14-mile handicap event. After leading all the way he was caught with a quarter of a mile to go and had to be content with fourth place. Results were:—
