The West Indian cricketers, who face the third test against England on TTiursday. made unimpressive showings in their warm-up matches. They hung on grimly to draw with Hampshire on Friday, and yesterday made a poor start against Essex.
Hampshire left the tourists in score 213 in 145 minutes on a sticky wicket and the West Indies had their last pair batting with only 136 runs on the board at the close.
Final scores were: Hampshire 329 and 64 for eight declared; West Indies 183 and 126 for nine (A. Wassell four for 28). Against Essex, the West Indies, batting on a damp and green wicket were 110 for four at stumps. The match got off to a late start and the tourists made 36 without loss In 40 minutes’ play before tea.
