Trousers Six Feet Wide

The largest pair of trousers in Christchurch on Thursday would undoubtedly have been a pari of salwars—long, loose pants worn by women in parts of Pakistan, teamed with a chemise top—shown at a World Fellowship luncheon held by the Young Women’s Christian Association. At the waist top, the salwars were almost six feet across. A good-sized woman could have fitted comfortably into one leg. Mrs Keith Mitchell, who has been a mission teacher in Pakistan for more than six years, explained that by means of a draw-string the top was gathered very tightly about the hips. The bagginess made the salwars cool to wear, but used a great deal of material, she said.
