3 Goals From Corners
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 30.’ The art of taking penalty corners and their effectiveness were convincingly demonstrated by toe. Australian hockey team in defeating Auckland. 4-2, on Saturday. Australia established an early 1-0 advantage by this means, and in the last 10 minutes broke toe hearts of a gallant Auckland defence by recovering from a 1-2 deficit with the help of two more penalty corners. The Australians scored three times against a frozen, immobile defence. The third time R. Wakelin, in goal, failed to get a hand waist-height before the ball passed his shoulder Another time he stood helpless underneath a scalding shot which rieochetted off the crossbar and leapt almost out of the ground. The charging Auckland defenders never got within three yards of smothering the shot, not even when D. McWatters had to push the ball into the circle before letting fly. . McWatters (3) and Ft. Evans scored for Australia and B. Rogers and N. Hayde for Auckland. The half-time score was 1-1.
