Parking Ban

Parking space in Colombo street between Armagh and Gloucester streets will be available to late-night shoppers this evening for the first time for months. In deciding on the 4 pm. to 6 p.m. ban on parking in Colombo street from Oxford terrace to Moorhouse avenue, which applies from Monday to Friday inclusive, the City Council altered the hours of the ban in the Gloucester streetArmagh street section of the main street. Pleasant Day After a frost of 9 deg. recorded at the Botanic Gardens yesterday morning, temperatures rose to 47deg. at noon and 50.2 deg. at 1 p.m. The sky was clear and there was no wind. Airport Fountain A fountain may be placed at the entrance to Christchurch airport as part of the beautifying and landscaping plan for the area. The proposed fountain will be about 40ft across and will have a central water jet that will rise about 20ft. The circular fountain will be surrounded by a flagstone footpath and flower beds. Later it is’ planned to add trees and shrubs around the rest of the two acre area. The airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) said the fountain would be a focal point at the head of Memorial avenue. Lambing Again Lambs are now being born in Canterbury. A mob of more than 100 ewes with lambs at foot were seen in the Hawarden district yesterday. They are on the property of Mrs M. M. A. Croft and Mr N. G. Croft. The ewes, which are Corriedales mated with Southdown and Cheviot rams, began lamibinig at the beginning of the month and according to Mr Croft have been doing well with no significant losses. They have been brought into small -shelter paddocks at night. It is expected that they will be ready ‘for marketing in August. Brief Summer After enjoying a 10-day summer in Ottawa, the principal of Lincoln College (Dr. M. M. Burns) has returned to Christchurch, and winter. Dr. Burns went to Ottawa to attend a meeting of the International Advisory Committee on the Natural Sciences Programme of U.N.E.S.C.O. Dr. M. S. Thacker,- of India, was chairman of the, meeting. There are 14 members. Jersey Conference Preliminary arrangements for the world Jersey conference to be held in New Zealand in 1965 were outlined to the recent annual conference of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association in Nelson. The managing secretary (Mr G. H. Dawick) said there was already a tremendous amount of interest In this conference from overseas Jersey breeders and societies. Application Refused A renewed request by the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr N. E. Kirk) to the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) for Chatham Islands patients in mainland hospitals to have their fares home paid on discharge has again been refused by the Minister, Mr Kirk said yesterday.
