Punters’ Bad Fortunes In Brisbane Double

[From The Australian Correspondent Of “Th* Press ’] SYDNEY

The long run of success by punters in major handicaps ended with the Queensland Turf Club’s double in Brisbane over the week-end. Multala. an unsound horse difficult to train, found a period without soreness lasting sufficiently for him to win the Stradbroke Handicap as an outsider —and then broke down as he was being pulled up.

To make certain that bookmakers escaped all liability Campo, the horse with 45 owners, had all the lucky breaks in the Brisbane Cup on Monday and won from Piper’s Son and River Seine Almost everyone agrees that Sometime and Refulgent should have been first and second, but the simple fact was that they were pocketed near the rails, with no opening through which to make their runs while the others fought out the finish. The big disappointments of the two races were the favourites, each of which was well and truly beaten. Kilshery, favourite tor the Stradbroke in spite of a wide barrier Mid 9-8 in the saddle, hit the front inside the last furlong and then faded away as he was tackled by the place-getters Muilala. Prunda and Samson.

The trouble with Kilshery was that he had to sprint from his outside box to get position, and, in fact, he led the field at the end of a furlong. His rider, G. Moore, eased him back endeavouring to give him a little respite. But the pacemaking had been

taken up by others, and it was a solid pace which kept Kilshery moving, even though he appeared in the "box” seat in third place.

Then the opening came for him to shoot into the lead about a furlong from the post, but his sight of the first prize was short-lived as weight and the early effort told its tale.

Campo is owned by the Punters’ Club, an organisation of 45 shareholders in Victoria formed to give its members an interest in the ownership of horses. Horses bought by the organisation are handed over to B. Courtney to train. They are raced on lease by selected members of the club, since Australian racing rules limit to a maximum of six the number of people in whose name a horse may run.

Campo cost lOOOgns as a yearling and Monday's stake was worth £14,000 in stake money—the total value of the race, £20.500, making it the richest race ever run in Brisbane.

The hot favourite was the Sydney Cup winner, Maidenhead, which ran a shocking race in the rear of the field.

Tlie trainer of Maidenhead, K. Cantrell, was shocked -at the result, especially as in the final work-out Maidenhead and Campo worked together and Maidenhead had to be held back to keep with her companion Cantrell voiced the opinions of hundreds in the enclosure when he said: “Nothing would have made me believe that Campo could ever beat Maidenhead over a distance: it's happened and what a beating, one first and the other last, ana it's still hard to believe.”

Sydney’s holiday racing was staged on a quagmire track, even though there was not any rain on either day. Persian Spa won the June Stakes, an outsider in the field, and, keeping in line with the trends of the season, El Rocco at 20 to 1 won the second leg of the double, the Winter Stakes.

Rider Injures Leg

J. Moriarty, who is attached to C. G. Humphries stable, received severe bruising of the lower left leg when he was thrown from a yearling and struck the running rail at Riccarton yeaterday. At the time of the accident Moriarty’s mount and two other younsters were working in company on the sand. Moriarty, who was formerly with J. A. Macfarlane, at Otaki, is at present serving a probationary period before becoming apprenticed.
