GOLF Auckland Takes Women’s Title; Canterbury Third

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, June 13.

After the favourite, Thames Valley-Bay of Plenty, was heavily beaten by Waikato-King Country in the final round, the consistent Auckland side scored another win and took the Russell Grace Gup for women’s inter-provincial golf at the Ngamotu links, New Plymouth, today.

When the morning round finished, Thames Valley-Bay of Plenty was equal with Auckland, but the afternoon’s series decided the winner convincingly.

By its victory, Waikato-King Country moved up to second place and Canterbury was third. Last year’s winner, South Canterbury, finished ninth.

Auckland played consistently throughout the tournamenit and every match was won with something to spare. Until the sixth round, the Thames Valley-Bay of Plenty side had looked Auckland’s equals, but it surprisingly lost form against Waikato-King Country. Final averages, with games played in parenthesis, were: Auckland (6). 5; WaikatoKing Country (6), 4.83; Canterbury (5), 4.1; ManawatuWanganui, (6), 3.83; Thames Valley-Bay of Plenty (6), 3.83; Taranaki (5), 3.5; Wellington (5), 3; Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay (6), 2.583; South Canterbury (6), 2.25; Northland (5), 1.5; Otago (6). 1.416; Southland (5), 1.3; Nelson (5), .6.
