Guide Dogs For The Blind

Sir, —I have naw had my guide dog Kola for 18 months. I went to Perth to collect her, and train with her. I thought I was capable of travelling from point to point on my own, but I find I am freer with my dog. With Kola guiding me, I can take six or seven different routes to work instead of only one, and I am also able to walk the two and a half miles, a walk I would never have attempted by myself. At work my dog takes me safely past obstructions in alleyways. Because of the help of my dog I can take normal outside employment, I am more confident and independent, and I can lead a much more normal and satisfactory family life. A totally blind man can never* achieve complete independence, but the help of a guide dog is a great step towards independence.—Yours, etc., P. SANWAYS. Auckland, June 11, 1963.
