Some Items Increase
Although the over-all value of produce exported from New Zealand to the United States during 1962 was a little leas than that of 1961, there was an increase in some items, says the May issue of the Department of Industries and Commerce trade promotion publication, “Export News.” Butter and butterfat increased from £ 168.673 in 1961 to £216.357 in 1962, and other dairy produce from £11,724 to £117,930 in this period. New Zealand's main dairy export items, butter, Cheddar cheese and milk powder were on stringent quotas, while voluntary restraint in exporting Colby cheese has been exercised by New Zealand at the request of the United States Government In the main, imports of New Zealand dairy products into the United States have risen. Details of the United States consumption of dairy products, however, are an Interesting study into the esting habits of Americans, the magazine says. Comparable figures for 1910 and the present day show that the consumption of fluid milk and cream dropped 3 per cent., while that of cheese increased 100 per cent., and condensed and evaporated milk 123 per cent. Butter consumption dropped 170 per cent and the use of margarine rose 490 per cent. Since 1920, the dry whole milk figure rose 300 per cent, and the figure for non-fat dry milk increased 300 tunes, says the magazine.
