SIGHTINGS OF PARTRIDGES
Society Seeking
Information
Reports on authentic sightings of partridges or any in. formation concerning birds that might have died would be welcomed by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, said a report presented to the council of the society last evening by the president (Mr F. J. Gorton). The return of the leg band from any bird that had been killed or died from natural causes would be of interest to the society and the Wildlife Division, the report said. One of the partridges released in the Lincoln area this year had been killed when it flew against the Cab of a moving lorry. The driver reported the matter by telephone, and a field officer went and inspected the bird and recovered the leg band.
The action of Mr G. B. Kirkland in reporting the matter was appreciated by the Wildlife Division and the society, because the progress or loss of the birds was of deep interest to those who were endeavouring to have them established.
The chairman of the game committee (Mr G. Mugford) said that farmers in the area were very helpful. Recently the sighting of five birds had been reported. One was without a band, and was thus one of last season’s hatching. This was encouraging.
