RELIGION IN SCHOOLS
Christianity Not Specified
(N.Z. Press Association) • AUCKLAND. June 12. There is nothing in the new act governing religious instruction in schools which specifies the Christian religion. Instruction in nonChristian faiths can now legally be given in schools, according to the Director of Education (Mr A. E. Campbell).
This was stated in an interpretation of the act asked for by the Auckland Education Board. The directors reply was received at today s meeting of the board. The board also asked the director who would care for pupils who gained exemption from religious instruction. The reply to this was that the head teacher must arrange for their supervision. The Auckland board’s sec-retary-manager (Mr I. J. McCarthy) said most committees appeared to be having no difficulty in complying with the provisions of the act. although there had been several difficult situations. It would seem desirable to operate the act for at least 12 months before asking for any amendment.
