EMERGENCY POLICE
3900 Needed For Force
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 12.
Recruiting of civil defence police would start shortly, the commandant of the Police Training School (Superinitendenit E. J. G. Hoffam) announced at a civil defence course at Whenuapai today. He said that a-bout 3900 would be required and it was felt that with adequate advertising. the authority would get that number. The Police Force, with more than 2500 members, was adequately staffed to meet normal law and order requirements. but it had no hope of coping with work caused by a major disaster, as well as with its usual duties. Civil police would be used to replace regular police dispatched to a disaster area. They would be entirely under the control of the police officer in charge of the district. People in key positions would not be enrolled, said Superintendent Hoffam. Recruits would have to be “fairly fit.” Women would be recruited. There would have to be some training in basic police duties, and a booklet of instructions would be issued. Lectures and demonstrations would be held to maintain interest.
