World Record For Moderns (N Z.P.A.-Reutej—Copyright) LONDON, June 12. A new world record for the sale of modern paintings was set up at Sotheby’s, the London dealers, last night, according to unchecked figures, when the turn-over after one hour exceeded £BOO,OOO. The previous record was £781.000 for the Goldschmidt collection in 1958. A Monet, “The Railway Bridge at Argenteuille,” made £77.000 and a Renoir, “Girls With Hats,” went for £61,000. Later the official total for the sale of the collection of the Glasgow shipping magnate, William Cargill, who died last November—was given as £1,043.590 for 49 lots.
