Clements Won All Seven Games
YTUCH of the credit for A x Templeton’s win in the 1963 Woodward Cup golf contest should go to the team's No. 1 player, R. E. Clements, whose feat of winning ail his seven games provided an example to inspire his fellow players. Clements, the only Canterbury player to gain six wins at a Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament, was the one man to achieve a perfect record in this season's cup contest
His first and most meritorious victory was against the international, R. G Murray, 1 up, and bis subsequent wins were against S. C. Cliff (5/4), F. W. Roberts (5/4), I. J. Campbell (6/5), B. L. Clegg (1 up), H. J. Gosset (3/1) and A. W. Robinson (5/4). Not,one of the other five Templeton players who appeared regularly for the aide ended with a poor record. A. C. Browne, the
new Freyberg Rose Bowl representative, won six matches and lost only to K. D. Foxton; C. H. Johnson also had six wins and a loss: L. P. Boyd and D. Murdoch each had five wins; and N. Mabey four wins and a half.
Templeton’s six regular players, therefore, lost only eight times in 42 games.
In individual matches won, Russley A had slightly more success than Templeton. Its three top men— Murray, Foxton and R. K. Atkinson—each lost but once. W. D. Armstrong had five wins and a half and J. R. Broadhurst, after losing twice on the first day, won his next five games. Although he did not appear regularly, R. Irving (Waitikiri) was one of the most successful players in this year’s contest. He played four matches, and won them all. The best individual records were:—
