“INVASION” BY U.S.
No Room At The Inn
(Special Crspdt. NJZ.P.A.) LONDON. June 10.
President Kennedy’s entourage when he visits the Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) at his home, Birch Grove, in the Sussex hamlet of Chelwood Gate—population 1000—at the end of this month will be 110. In an effort to find accommodation for them a United States Embassy representative spent the week-end touring the district but without much success. “Wherever the President goes the White House staff must go too. He has to keep in constant touch with the American Strategic Air Force Command and be available for snap decisions on major policy matters.” said the “Daily Express.” "His retinue includes security men. communications experts, political advisers, secretaries and clerks.” “Bill Grove, host at the Red Lion pub just up the road from Birch Grove always puts up the Prime Minister’s bodyguard but a request for 100 beds had him floored. He can manage to squeeze in a couple of beds at the most "Another pub half a mile away can take eight for bed and breakfast, but with 100 people left to accommodate the Embassy representative has now decided to ask at every pub and club in the area. “Chelwood Gate " residents who are used to dealing with VJ.P. visits can remember nothing like this. “Mr Kennedy’s train is likely to be equalled at least by a number of American newspapermen covering the visit."
