Cholmondeley Home

Sir, —I am surprised that neither K. L. Purchas nor E. B. Miles has mentioned the name of the founder of the Cholmondeley Home. If my memory sen es me. the Cholmondeley Memorial Home (as it was originally known) was built through the generosity of Hugh Heber. Cholmondeley, as a memorial to his wife, who predeceased him. Their marriage was not blessed by children of their own, but they both had a very real love of children. Mr Cholmondeley's name appears on the honours board of the children’s ward of the Christchurch Hospital as one of those who donated the cost of a bed. No doubt, when the home at Governor’s Bay was built, the inmates of the children’s home at New Brighton were transferred there; that would have been in accordance with the benefactor’s wish. I thought

the Cholmondeley Memorial Home was built earlier than 1919, but I may be wrong.— Yours, etc., HONOUR WHERE HONOUR IS DUE. June 11, 1963.
