TRADESMEN PAINTERS
Registration Being Sought
“We want to keep the painting and decorating trade for skilled tradesmen,” said Mr S. Falkingham, secretary of the Canterbury Guild of Master Painters. Decorators; and Signwriters, yesterday. “Quite a lot of painters are not trained as tradesmen.”
Mr Falkingham said the guild was pressing for registration of painters to protect the public and the status of the trade, and alsc to protect apprentices.' Mr A. Chappell, the guild’s president, told the monthly meeting of the guild's 150 members that it was urgent to both the trade and the public that registration of painters should come into force soon.
“Our trade.” he’said, “is not one that can be operated by a person with a can of paint in one hand and a brush in the other. It is a highly skilled trade in all its branches, and can be carried out successfully only by those who understand the formulas and application of the large variety of modern finishes available in New Zealand today.” Sixteen members of the South Canterbury Guild who travelled from Timaru for the meeting were welcomed by the president.
