Production At Kinleith

Vegetable turpentine is now being exported from New Zealand. A distillation plant has been opened for the first time in New Zealand by New Zealand Forest Products. Ltd, says the May issue of “Export News." the magazine of the Department of Industries and Commence The main distillation plant has recently started operations at Kinleith, after a four-year trial of a pilot plant. Designed by Dr. G. A, Nicholls, the new plant produces approximately 30 gallons of turpentine an hour. This is expected to meet New Zealand’s present vegetable tuiyentine needs, including quantities for export.

The turpentine is a byproduct of the process of digestion of radiate pine, extracted from the pulp digester while the chips are being heated. After distillation, clarification and drying, it ft put into 44-gallon drums and becomes yet another of the widening group of New Zealand primary product export items, says the magazine.
