Four tenders, all from firms of high international standing, had been received for the tailrace tunnel at the Manapouri dam project, the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) said today. He said the Government hoped to announce the successful tenderer late this month or early in July. When the project was first put to tender, 11 firms examined the feasibility of the project on the ground. Some of those who did so were amalgamations of Arms specially formed for the job.
The tailrace is the first part of the Manapouri scheme, which is expected to cost more than £3O million This first development will cost about £9 million.
A start on the tailrace project will be made a« so n as a tendetr is accepted The project is now in the hands of the Ministry of Works, which wants the production of power for the New Zealand grid as soon as it is economically possible. Planning is going forward irrespective of the needs of Comalco, which, however, will have first call on thd power.
