NEW BAN ON PARKING
Hotel Union Protests
The Canterbury Hotel. Hospital and Restaurant Workers’ Union protested strongly against the new Colombo street parking restrictions that came into force this week, said the union's secretary, Mr L. N. Short yesterday. The new restrictions, he said, could cost many members of his union their jobs. The restrictions clear Colombo street, between Oxford terrace and Moorhouse avenue, of all parked vehicles from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday. In the area where the regulations applied, said Mr Short, were eight large licensed hotels and numerous tearooms and restaurants. AU of these would have their trade seriously affected by the restrictions. Mr Short said that as a result of the seriously-affected trade staff'could be dismissed. “It is well known that the main trading hours of Christchurch hotels are between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.,” he said. “These are the very hours that the restrictions prevent car parking in Colombo street.”
His union, said Mr Short, strongly protested against these new regulations instituted by Cr. T. D. Flint and the traffic committee. The union wondered if Cr. Flint took into consideration the main trading hours of Christchurch hotels when the new restrictions were being framed.
“We are experiencing unemployment in Christchurch today," he said. “This union does not appreciate the actions of city councillors who bring in new regulations such as these They will definitely tend to worsen the present employment conditions of our members.”
