Pacific Charter Flights
Tours to the South Pacific at about one-third of the normal cost are envisaged by two Canterbury men, Messrs K. L. Barker, of Ashburton, and D. Miller, of Christchurch.
They are organising a Pacific Holiday Club, which will be non-profit making, and eventually hope to arrange trips to Tahiti, Malaya, San Francisco and further afield At present they are hoping to enrol members for a trip to New Caledonia in August, Mr Barker said yesterday. If a DC6 was chartered from the French airline T.A.1., and all 60 seats taken, the fare could be as low as £25 return. If the DC6 was not filled, the fare would be ' between £3O and £35. The fare between Auckland and New Caledonia in the off season is £42. Mr Barker said.
Already 30 people have said they would join the club, he said.
If there were enough passengers, it plight be possible to charter a DCB jet from Noumea belonging to T.A.I. Because the proposed club would not be able to advertise if -it is granted the charter, it intends to send circulars to universities, schools and organisations which might be interested Both men- became interested in the scheme when they met on a tour of New Caledonia last year. They believe that their scheme would not interfere with present economy tours run by travel companies and airlines.
A public meeting would be held in Christchurch soon to gauge public interest.
